India is one of the biggest sources of software testing services, and the choice of companies is wide. This checklist helps you compare providers on what matters: proof of results, the people you will work with, and how the engagement is run.
1. Ask for proof, not logos
- Ask for case studies in your industry, such as fintech, healthcare or e-commerce, with real results.
- Ask what went wrong on a past project, and how it was handled.
- Ask to speak to a current or former client with a similar product.
2. Check independent reviews
Read verified reviews on sites such as Clutch and GoodFirms, and look at the dates and what reviewers say about communication and delivery. Be careful with lists written by vendors that rank themselves first.
3. Look at the people
- Who will actually be on your team, and how senior are they?
- How long have they been with the company?
- Who is your single contact when something goes wrong?
4. Test their automation approach
Ask to see a sample automation framework, not just a list of tools. A good team can explain how they keep tests maintainable, handle flaky tests and connect testing to your build pipeline.
5. Check how the work is run
- How do they report progress, and how often?
- Which of your tools will they use, such as Jira and Slack?
- How much working-hours overlap will you have with their team?
- How are changes in scope handled and priced?
6. Protect your business
- Do they sign an NDA before you share access?
- How do they handle access to your code, test data and environments?
- If you end the contract, who owns the test cases and automation scripts, and what handover do you get?
- Do they follow recognised standards such as ISO 27001? Ask for evidence rather than a badge.
7. Understand the pricing
Ask for a written scope and compare providers on the same terms. Watch for quotes that don’t say how many testers, which devices, or how retesting after fixes is handled.
8. Try before you commit
A short trial on your real product tells you more than any proposal. It shows the quality of the bug reports, the speed of communication and how well the team learns your product.
Red flags
- No references, or only anonymous testimonials.
- A price with no written scope.
- Reluctance to sign an NDA or to explain who owns the deliverables.
- A team you never get to meet before signing.
- Claims of covering everything with no examples.
A quick scorecard
Score each provider from 1 to 5 on: proof in your industry, review quality, team seniority, automation approach, communication and time overlap, security and NDA terms, pricing clarity, and trial availability. Total the scores and discuss the gaps with your top two.
